Schools In Javea

Due to the large expat populace, living in Javea offers parents the choice to select an education for their children from the Spanish or British systems.

There are two Javea schools catering for children from the ages of 2 to 18 using the British curriculum.

These are:

The Lady Elizabeth School, located in Cumbre del Sol, for KS1 and KS2 (2 -11 years) students. Elder KS3 pupils (aged 11- 18) attend a second branch of the school in Llíber. This school follows an IGCSE and A level exams in KS3/4 itinerary.

Xabia International School is situated in Javea on the Careterra de Portichol. It has a site for ks1/ks2 pupils, and another for KS3. The school teaches the British curriculum and operates IGCSE and A level exams.

The Spanish education system is organised in three stages. Kindergarten caters for ages 3 to 6, then pupils move onto primary from the age of 6 to 12, and the third stage is “instituto” for students aged 12 to 18.

Kindergarten and primary are normally housed on the same site, and in Javea there are 6 schools which cater for children of kindergarten and primary age. Classes are taught in the local dialect of Valenciano with the exception of Vicente Tena where lessons are taught in Castellano (Spanish). One of the schools, the Colegio Maria Inmaculada is semi private.

These schools then feed into the town’s two institutos, where children receive compulsory education to the age of 16, completing 4 years of ESO (obligatory secondary education). Once ESO is completed, pupils may leave school or continue to the age of 18 and take selective exams in order to gain entry into university or other forms of higher education. Students leaving at 16 must have an ESO certificate in order to access vocational or government training courses.
