The City Of Cartagena

Cartagena is a city located on the Costa Calida  in the south of Spain. It is a city that is steeped in history, and has been an important Spanish naval port since the sixteenth century. The harbour is defended by forts  and is the site of the Heroes of Cavite. This monument was erected as a remembrance to those who fought in the battles of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba.

Cartagena has only recently been recognised as a place to visit, and the city is peaceful and beautiful. Founded in 221 BC by Hasdrubal, the leader of the Carthaginians, the city still has ancient monuments dotted around the town. The Roman theatre which was built in the end of the 1st BC can still be seen today, and is one of the most distinctive monuments in Cartagena. The Calle Mayor (Main Street) is the main area of the city located in the old district. Several shops, boutiques, art galleries and cafes are found on the road, and is a great place to sit down and enjoy modernity mixed with history. The several landscaped squares in Cartagena is an increasingly popular place for visitors to sit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and watch the world go by.
