Torrevieja

The city of Torrevieja lies in the region of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. The name is derived from 'Torre' meaning tower, and 'vieja' meaning old, and used to exist primarily as an ancient guard tower. The tower was demolished after an Earthquake, but the same stones were used to rebuild the church in the centre of the city. Today, the city boasts beautiful white sand beaches and historic sites, making it an increasingly popular tourist destination.
Torrevieja is surrounded by two large saltwater lagoons, which are the largest in Europe. The Salterns of Torrevieja have been designated as national parks, and are home to an amazing array of bird species. The salt flats have been used for salt production for hundreds of years, and still provides salt for export today.
Torrevieja is home to a large yachting club with berths for over 1500 boats. The city offers a great range of outdoor pursuits, including boating, golfing, trekking, flying, fishing, tennis and a range of water sports. There are water parks in the area, as well as numerous shopping centres, cinemas, restaurants and bars.
Torrevieja is well wet up for visitors, and offers a lot in the way of entertainment and eating places. The city is full of historic sites and culture which can be enjoyed by its guests. The city plays host to numerous fiestas which transform Torrevieja into a colourful and vibrant place to enjoy.
