While many tourists choose Javea for their summer holidays to enjoy the fabulous beaches, superb restaurants, and lively nightlife the town has to offer, Javea is very much more than just the summer scene. There are numerous buildings, wooded paths, and spots offering stunning views within walking distance of the popular Arenal area. Some of these are mentioned in local guide books and websites, but others are largely ignored, and therefore difficult for short term visitors to discover.

One of more well publicised attractions is Juan Soler Blasco Museum. The Museum of Javea is housed in the Palace of Antoni Banyuls (Xàbia, 1662) who was the royal butler to King Felipe III (Philip III of Spain). The interior has three floors but only the original ceramic floor with its hand-painted green and white enamel tiles called “mocadorets” in room VI remain.

The first floor displays selected artwork by the painter J.B. Segarra Llamas (Xàbia, 1916-1994), in diverse techniques (oil, charcoal, graphite, sanguine or red chalk, and watercolour), as well as a set of the artist’s personal items.

The museum is spread over a number of floors, all of which are accessible by lift or stairs – and entry is free!

The museum has an extensive collection of valuable artefacts found in the Javea coastal waters and on land covering its history between the 7th Century B.C. until the 19th Century.

There is a plaster model of the medieval town which we now see as the historical centre of the town.  Also there is a mock up medieval house door, showing the average person’s height at the time.

There are exhibitions showing Javea’s agricultural history including machinery used in olive pressing and wine making, baskets and clothing worn by the workers.

Thanks to local volunteers, there are accompanying notes at the side of each display in various languages.

From the upper floor you have access to the roof top terrace where the view is one of the best in Javea with vistas from Cabo San Antonio right round to Cap Prim and beyond.
